Sue,
I have done all those things that you've suggested and they have all worked at various times with various readings. (I like the occassional variety, too.) At first my kids would get frustrated with each other for "you said what I was going to say," but they're getting better about it now.
One of the latest narration techniques in my house has been by my 5yo dd. She's not yet reading on her own, but LOVES to be read to. After I finish reading the book to her, then she wants to "read" it to me. Of course she uses the pictures on the pages as prompts and the story is not a word-for-word (reading), but I recently realized that what she is doing is simply her version of narration. (Insert lightbulb "ON" here!!) YEAH! (And a little Honesty here: At first I didn't always want to take the time to listen to her "read" every single story back to me after I read them to her, but once the lightbulb went on in my head--the IS her narrations!--I now S L O W down and listen to her "read" at every chance!)
Sue, your talk at the STL Expo was so very encouraging and and a wonderful CM refresher for me! I *know* that this method works for us and I really don't know why we got away from it in the first place, except I do remember feeling like we it was just almost TOO easy, we could not possibly be doing ENOUGH "school." HA! I have been praying about it so much since the Expo I now truly feel that this is the Lord's will for our homeschooling journey and I'm so grateful for it! You are an angel! :-)
Many thanks and blessings,

Misti,

I'm so glad you were encouraged at the expo. That's our goal - to encourage homeschoolers in their journey!

The narration with your 5 year old sounds so PRECIOUS! Good for you to slow down and take the time to listen to her. This is not only helping her perfect her narration techniques, but it builds into her life because Mommy is willing to spend time with her!

I pray your homeschooling journey is joy-filled for you and your children!
